How to understand the indicators of LED bead parameters?

There are many parameter indicators for LED beads. Compared to most non electronics professionals, in order to understand the LED market, it is necessary to understand some basic knowledge of LED beads, including some LED parameters and performance indicators.

01 LED bead current

Firstly, the current of LED beads, which generally refers to the forward limit current of LED beads, refers to the limit current (IF) of LED beads when the positive pole is connected to the positive pole of the power supply and the negative pole is connected to the negative pole of the power supply. Currently, it is mostly around 20MA. The light attenuation current of general LED beads cannot exceed IF2/3, approximately between 15MA and 18MA. The luminous intensity of LED beads is only positively correlated with IF within the corresponding range. When IF>20MA, the enhancement of brightness is irregular. Therefore, it is generally reasonable to choose the working current of LED beads at around 17-19MA. With the continuous development of technology, high-power LED beads are constantly emerging, such as 0.5WLED (IF=150MA), 1WLED (IF=350MA), 3WLED (IF=750MA), and more LED bead specifications.

02 LED bead lifespan

The lifespan of LED beads is also a crucial indicator. In the instruction manual of LED beads, it is indicated how long they can be used, such as operating for about 50000 hours. However, it should be noted that the lifespan of the LED beads cannot be simply determined by whether they are still in operation. It is because LED does not have the problem of filament melting like traditional lamps, so it will not stop operating directly, but will gradually decline with the passage of time. High quality LED beads can maintain around 60% of their initial brightness after 50000 hours of continuous operation. The best way to extend the lifespan of LED beads is to reduce the thermal energy generated by LED chips, which is the fundamental cause of LED losses.

 

So, only by gaining a better understanding of LED bead parameter indicators can we choose better LED bead brands and LED bead products.
